Frank Hurley was the real-life Indiana Jones of photography – a man who risked everything for the shot. He sailed south on the great polar expeditions of Douglas Mawson and Ernest Shackleton, capturing the now-iconic images of the Endurance trapped and doomed in Antarctic ice, part of one of the most extraordinary survival stories ever told. He documented both World Wars, creating some of the most arresting visual records of the 20th century. He pioneered early film and colour techniques long before anything resembling modern editing. And beyond the ice and the battlefields, he chased adventure through Papua, New Guinea, Java, the Middle East, and inland Australia. A born showman, he brought it all to life through spectacular lectures and screenings – not simply recording history, but making audiences feel it.

Grantlee brings that same gift for storytelling. He's Australia's No. 1 bestselling historical biographer, with more than 20 acclaimed books to his name. He received the Medal of the Order of Australia for his writing, is a Walkley Award finalist, and his nationally bestselling titles include Flinders, Banjo, Monash, and Sister Viv. In person, he's warm, generous, and genuinely wonderful to watch.

Dymocks Bundaberg will be selling copies of Grantlee's books on the night.

Bookings for this author talk open 20 November 2026.
